Sattler throws a curveball into awning fabric manufacturers. All fabric companies RetractableAwnings.com prize style, variety, and quality; Sattler has a refreshingly unusual, even playful, take on style by chasing after what they call the psychology of perception. Sattler is all about color, and they have delved into the most creative places to find colors that match their customers' whimsy.
Sattler has a traditional history: it was founded in 1875 in Austria. It started as the company of August Sattler, and, 135 years later, it is still a family company and still based in Austria. Its headquarters are in Graz-Thondorf, Austria, and it has manufacturing facilities in both Austria and Germany. Sattler is a respected materials manufacturing company, covering everything from traditional textiles to biogas and liquid storage containers. Sattler is a massive textile manufacturer, producing roughly 20,000,000 square meters of fabric annually.
Sattler appears to be focused on chemical and engineering research and high technology development, but underneath the scientific exterior is a surprisingly imaginative design firm. Sattler hired a psychologist and a host of photographers to photograph and analyze landscapes from around the world, on the assumption that memories and emotional connections are forged to our native soils and histories – and that this connections define our favorite colors. They even study the effect that sunlight coming through fabric has on color and mood. Combining their regional color patterns with a niche element of psychology, Sattler created a talking color kit. Their color kit is an interactive test to identify each individual's best color pallette, which, in turn, helps customers select their ideal Sattler fabric.
Sattler fabrics are solution-dyed acrylic, which makes them inherently resistant to mold, rot, stains, fading, and UV damage. Sattler solution-dyed acrylic fabrics are lightweight and breathable and come with a 5-year warranty.
Sattler offers two other lines of fabric that respond to specialized installation situations:
- FireMaster is coated with a special treatment to make it flame retardant. This fabric is even certified as a flame retardant material by the California Fire Marshall. FireMaster also has a water-tight coating which makes it rain proof and ideal for outdoor applications, like seating areas, that may be exposed to rain. FireMaster comes in nine colors.
- Reflect fabrics are nearly opaque and offer excellent UV protection. Some Reflect materials have small pin-sized holes which let people see through them while still blocking most light.

Retractable awnings are inherently energy-efficient. Simply – and effectively – blocking sunlight reduces heat gain and UV damage. According to Sattler, their fabrics have two distinct effects on electricity usage:
Using awnings can cut air conditioning energy consumption up to 80%.
Adequate shade from awnings can lower indoor temperatures by almost 20 degrees.
Additionally, they did studies on the effectiveness of their fabrics at controlling UV rays. Very fair people can be sunburned within 5 - 10 minutes outdoors; the equivalent exposure under a Sattler fabric is 200 - 800 minutes, depending on the fabric color. People with average skin tones (sunburning in 20 - 30 minutes of sun exposure) won't sunburn for 800 - 2400 minutes. That is dramatic protection from the most damaging UV rays.
Green is a daily thing at Sattler. Sattler incorporates environmental assessments – the safety of the materials, waste, and manufacturing processes – as part of its standard research and development cycle.

Sattler has a process for full-color digital photographs to be printed on any of their awning fabrics. Sattler offers two different styles of awning printing:
- The Quality 314 D10 uses a special TEXgard finish helps the picture to be printed crisply, with another treatment to preserve the colors.
- The 316 D05 uses a lighter fabric, bringing sharper color gradients. It uses an acrylic coating to seal the image. This method is optimized for printing (fonts) so it is excellent for lettering.
