Pergolas are large, open outdoor structures often featured in gardens, large patios or decks, or even park areas. These outdoor living structures can be either freestanding or attached to a building and have elements such as columns, beams, and rafters to support and shelter an area outside. Pergolas are used for shading, creating an outdoor living space, enhancing any outdoor structure with an impressive aesthetic appeal, and even create an extension to an indoor room.
A patio covering can be specifically designed to serve both practical functionality and stylish decorative enhancements. Essentially, our patio shades are a rigid waterproof hanging exterior attached to a house, attached to a deck, or freestanding awning frame, anchored by posts that can be engineered withstand over 175 mph winds depending on the model and size. Most are also able to withstand heavy rains, even hail, which means if a storm rumbles ashore, you can rely on your patio awning. Since we realize the significance of versatile, durable products, we offer a wide range of styles to select, colors, and fabrics to select. A patio pergola can serve a variety of functions that will not only protect the area from harsh weather elements but will beautify the outdoor space as a whole.
A regular or traditional pergola is usually made from wood and does not have any type of cover to protect from sun, rain or snow. A retractable roof or what some term a retractable awning cover is a structure made of either aluminum or wood and has a retractable or rotating louver roof that provides protection from the elements including sun/rain or sun/rain/snow.
Yes, most of our pergola covers are waterproof (different than water resistant and water repellent), allowing for maximum use of outdoor space, regardless of unfavorable weather elements.
Water resistant - This offers the lowest level of water protection. If a retractable awning fabric resists water, it’s usually because the fabric itself is acting as a barrier between you and a very light shower. Tightly woven fabrics will offer a very small degree of water resistance, as it takes some time for the water to seep through the material. It is not impervious to water penetration but can stand a very limited exposure to precipitation. However, with the addition of a coating or impregnation, you can make a retractable awning fabric water repellent.
Water repellent - a step up from water resistance and offers a medium level of water protection. This means that water can’t easily penetrate the material (the technical term is that it’s hydrophobic). It beads on the outside instead. However, as soon as you apply pressure – like the skies suddenly opening and releasing a whole load of heavy rain, rainwater starts to seep in through the coating, the fabric and onto your patio or deck.
Waterproof - Waterproof material or product is one which is completely impervious to water penetration and offers the highest level of water protection including heavy rain. No water can get in or out of the product or material or around the edges. A waterproof material or product is able to provide sustained protection from water.
RetractableAwnings.com does not offer water-resistant fabric. We only offer water repellent fabrics on our folding lateral arm awnings and waterproof fabrics on all* of our retractable roof pergolas.
*Perugia model excluded as this product type is only for sun protection and not for rain protection.
Since a regular or traditional pergola does not have any type of cover to protect from sun, rain or snow it is difficult to compare it to a retractable roof pergola. To be fair, one needs to add the cost of the regular pergola to the cost of a waterproof cover itself (our Firenze model) and then compare that to an "all in one" retractable roof pergola like out Salerno model for example. Our experience is that the cost of the regular/traditional pergola and a waterproof cover such as our Firenze model is higher than that of an "all in one" unit such as our Salerno model plus the customer needs to work with 2 different vendors as Retractableawnings.com does not provide traditional wood pergolas. For a range of pricing, see each specific models web page.

Are all your retractable patio and deck pergola cover systems motorized?
Manual operation is available on most models up to 16’4” wide x 16’4” projection. Please check the web page for the specific model you are interested in to see if it is available with manual operation in the size needed.
Can you partially extend a retractable patio and deck pergola cover system?
Yes, our retractable patio and deck pergola cover systems can be stopped at any position when being extended or retracted when being operated manually or using a motor.
What is the difference between all of the retractable patio cover and deck pergola system models you offer??????
Most models vary in appearance regarding placement of the front beam and the number of guides from front to back – either one or two
All models are waterPROOF (not water RESISTANT) except for the Perugia model. This model is for sun protection only and not for either light or heavy rain protection
Models vary in terms of the maximum projection available
Models vary in terms of construction – either aluminum or wood framed (excluding the Perugia model)
What type of fabric do you use on your retractable patio deck pergola cover systems?
Retractableawnings.com only uses the very best in the world – Ferrari Precontraint from France and Mehler from Germany (solid – either light filtering or blackout), 3G Mermet (sheer mesh) from France and Phifer (sheer mesh) from the USA. All are fire retardant.
Do you heat seal the fabric panels to make up the full width of the retractable patio deck pergola cover system?
Retractableawnings.com uses high speed heat sealing welding machines to seal the fabric. This is considered the best method for PVC type fabrics as the seams don’t come apart since they are literally "melted" together.
Where is the motor located and does it add any additional width to the retractable patio and deck pergola cover system?
The motor on roman fold models that are motorized is always in the rear of the unit and usually located in the middle of the unit on a 3 span unit and on either the left or right side on a 2 span unit. On the Bioclimatique rotating louver roof model, the motor/actuator is either on the left or right side of the frame. For the Naples and Milan models the motors are located inside posts and are not visible. The Perugia model motor is located in the rear of the unit.
What is the amperage on the Somfy RTS motor?
Amperage on the motor varies depending on the size of the unit. Amperages range from 1.5 amps for a small unit to a maximum of 4.5 amps for a very large unit.
Which retractable patio deck pergola cover system model is right for me?
That depends on what type of weather you plan to have the product extended or partially extended in, where you would like to install the retractable patio deck pergola cover system, amount of wind you need the unit to withstand when extended or partially extended, the size you need or want (the area you want to cover), whether you want it for sun protection only or sun and heavy rain or sun, heavy rain, hail and snow and your budget.
Can I leave my retractable patio deck pergola cover system open in the wind and if so, how much wind?
All of our retractable patio deck pergola cover system models are Beaufort wind load approved in the fully extended position from Beaufort 6 (25-30mph/39-49km/hr) to Beaufort 12 (73mph+/118km/hr). Beaufort wind load number between 6 and 12 varies based on model and size (Perugia, Naples and Milan models are excluded and are not Beaufort wind load approved).
What is the difference between your wind sensor (anemometer) and motion sensor?
The wind sensor (anemometer) will close the retractable patio deck pergola cover system when the wind reaches a certain speed. The wind speed can be set to close the product anywhere between 12mph and 31mph and can always be changed in the future if wind conditions change.
The motion sensor was developed for folding lateral arm awnings that have a front bar that moves (retracts) when the wind blows. Since a retractable patio deck pergola cover system does not have a moving front bar (the front beam is fixed), a motion sensor is not used on a retractable patio and deck pergola cover system.
Can I use or leave my retractable patio deck pergola cover system extended during the rain or during the snow season?
All retractable patio and deck pergola cover systems from Retractableawnings.com can be used for and are designed for HEAVY rain, even hail (Perugia, Milan and Naples models excluded). HEAVY rainfall is considered more than .30” (7.6mm) per hour per the American Meteorological Society. The only model that is designed for heavy rain, hail, hurricanes and snow load is our Bioclimatique louver roof system.
Can I install your retractable patio and deck pergola cover system on vinyl or aluminum siding, stucco, or on masonry (common materials used for masonry are brick, concrete block, granite, glass block, marble, travertine, cast stone, limestone and cob) or a mobile home.
All models offered by Retractableawnings.com can be installed in to any of the above. What is most important, is to use the correct type and size of fastener depending on what substrate the retractable patio and deck pergola cover system is being installed in to. Retractableawnings.com provides everything needed for the product except for the fasteners. The decision on fastener type and length used is to be made locally based on the substrate being installed in to along with weather conditions and any building code requirements (if any).
Can I mount your retractable patio deck pergola cover system to my wall OR soffit / eave / overhang OR roof OR side of the rafter OR to a beam?
Models offered by Retractableawnings.com can be attached to one or more of the following: wall, wall to wall, post to post, soffit / eave / overhang, roof, inside a pergola and side of rafter or beam. To determine the type of mounting options available with a specific model, we suggest checking that particular model’s web page.
