A retractable vertical drop patio screen is a flexible screen that retracts and rolls up into an optional housing (a.k.a. a cassette box). The housing can be attached to the inside or outside of a window, a hinged door, around the windows on a french door, or any other square or rectangular opening such as the sides of gazebos and pergolas.

Unlike traditional fixed or permanent screens, retractable vertical drop awning screens remain out of sight until they are needed. As stated above, they retract into an optional, discrete housing when not in use which preserves your views as well as your home’s décor. In addition, retractable screens can be used for privacy, rain protection, sun/UV/heat/glare protection as well as bug and pollen protection.
A roll-down awning can be operated (raised and lowered) using a detachable crank or a motor. Motorization provides the ultimate in customer convenience and research by Somfy, the largest tubular motor manufacturer in the world, shows that homeowners use motorized drop screens four times more than manual drop screens.
Pricing for vertical drop screens is based on the width and drop of the opening being covered as well as the fabric type that is used and if the vertical drop screens will be manually operated, motorized or more. For a quote, based on your needs, please contact Retractableawnings.com here.
Vertical drop screens are probably our easiest product to install. You simply attach the brackets either inside or outside the opening then click the header cassette box (if purchased) onto the brackets. Once that is done, you attach the vertical side channels with ShyZip® either inside or outside the opening, guide wires or hold down brackets and that is it! Simple, right?
Since they are hidden away while not in use (if the optional hood/cassette is purchased) the amount of maintenance a drop awning requires is very minimal. We recommend cleaning the retractable vertical drop screens once or twice a season to eliminate any small dust particles in the mesh or on the fabric. You can clean our retractable vertical drop screens with mild detergent and water, and gently wipe them off. No maintenance is required on the motors as they are self-lubricating.
A vertical retractable privacy screen with a cassette box and zippered side channels is 99% waterproof (not water resistant) as long as a waterproof fabric such as Ferrari 502 Satin Precontraint is used. If a mesh fabric, such as Phifertex, is used they are not waterproof and are designed for sun/UV/glare/heat protection only.
Depending on what mesh type you choose - yes! The holes in our vertical drop awnings mesh are very small and protect against most bugs. For superior insect protection, especially from no-see-ums a/k/a sand flies, you need to choose a mesh-like Phifer No-See-Um which protects against tiny insects. All solid, opaque, non-mesh fabrics will keep all bug types out regardless of bug size.
