Simplot Headquarters - Boise, Idaho

Simplot is one of the largest privately-owned food and agribusiness companies in the world (ranked 59th in private companies by Forbes magazine).

The new Simplot headquarters was designed to better meet the company’s needs for a modern, collaborative work environment and consolidate employees at one central location. 

The project consisted of a 9-story building and adjacent 5-story annex building that, combined, contains approximately 325,000 gross square feet. The location is in the mountains in beautiful Boise, Idaho.

Retractableawnings.com's original contact was from an Architect at the Los Angeles office of Adamson Associates Architects a Canadian worldwide Interior Design and Architecture firm. 

Adamson requested 4 free standing motorized retractable patio pergola cover systems that would meet local, IBC wind load and seismic requirements. The Architect specified a contemporary, modern, and very clean aesthetic. 

The purpose of the project was simple - to provide a “retreat” for employees, visitors and guests for shade, heat, sun, glare, UV and heavy rain protection, thus the use of Ferrari 502 Precontraint.

Each of the 4 units installed used one continuous piece of fabric and one motor. The system frame and guides specified are made entirely of powder-coated aluminum using the Qualicoat® powder coating process. Frame and guide color chosen by the Architect was RAL 7006, Beige Grey. The marine-grade stainless steel components specified were Inox (470LI and 316) that are of the highest quality and have extremely high corrosion resistance. In fact, the components passed the European salt spray corrosion test as tested by Centro Sviluppo Materiali in Italy. Fabric specified was Ferrari Precontraint 502-8012 White, a fabric that is fire retardant meeting NFPA 701. A grey hood was requested for the rear of each unit to prevent snow, rainwater, leaves, bird droppings and debris from collecting in the folds of fabric when not extended. A running profile from end to end in the rear of each section was necessary to attach the specified Somfy RTS motors that are installed inside each motor safety box. The client chose to control the units using single channel remote controls that can operate each unit individually.

What made this project extremely complex was that the 4 units had to be hoisted up in crates to different levels/locations of a 9 story commercial building while many other construction projects occurred at the same time.

Simplot was elated with the results of all 4 retractable patio cover systems. The employee outdoor lunch area and other outdoor spaces were transformed. The Simplot retractable motorized pergola patio covers are truly a stunning example of outstanding design, function, and aesthetics as can be seen in the pictures. All client requirements were met, including a contemporary, modern, stylish and very clean appearance along with providing shade, sun, UV, glare, heat and heavy rain protection.
